BS 1139-6:2022 pdf free download – Metal scaffolding Part 6: Prefabricated tower scaffolds outside the scope of BS EN 1004, but utilizing components from such systems一 Specification.
Ties shall be rigid in both compression and tension.
NOTE External support can be provided by ties and/or anchors to the adjacent building or structure.
6.8 Connections
Connections shall be in accordance with BS EN 1004-1:2020, 7.8.
Couplers used to attach loose tubes used as structural members in prefabricated tower scaffolds shall conform to the relevant requirements of BS EN 74 or BS 1139-2.2. Couplers shall be tightened in accordance with the coupler manufacturer’s instructions.
6.9 Working and access platform units
Working and access platform units shall be in accordance with BS EN 1004-1:2 020, 7.9.
6.10 Assembly and dismantling
Erection and dismantling shall be in accordance with BS EN 1004-1:2020, 7.10.
Prefabricated tower scaffolds shall be designed such that they can be assembled, altered and dismantled without the need for personal fall protection equipment and without requiring the user to place themselves in a position where a risk of fall may occur.
NOTE Following industiy good practice, such as using an Advance Guardrail system or the 3T assembly method, reduces the risks of a fall.
6.11 Requirements for prefabricated tower scaffolds less than 2 m working platform height
Prefabricated tower scaffolds of less than 2 m working platform height shall be in accordance with
BS EN 1004-1:2020, 7.11.
6.12 Requirements for prefabricated tower scaffolds used for access to another place
When a prefabricated scaffold tower is used as a means of access to another place it shall:
a) be built on base plates;
b) be tied to the adjacent structure;
c) resist the horizontal loads specified in Table 4 line 3.2 and Table 5 line 1.4;
d) be positioned so that any horizontal gap between the platform of the prefabricated scaffold tower and the place being accessed is no greater than 25 mm; and
e) be positioned so that the upper surface of the platform and surface which is being accessed are vertically aligned within a tolerance of ±25 mm.
Where it is necessary to remove elements of the side protection or create openings in the side protection of the tower, for the purpose of access and egress, this shall be taken into account in the design. The tower shall continue to meet the structural requirements of Clause 7 whilst any elements of the side protection are removed, or any openings are created.
NOTE Attention is drawn to the Work at Height Regulations 2005 [1] Schedule 1, Schedule 2 Regulation 5 and Schedule 3 Part I Regulation 5.
6.13 Vertical distances between platforms
6.13.1 Requirements for platforms used for vertical ascent and descent and work
The vertical distance between the platforms shall be no greater than 2.25 m.
The vertical distance between the ground and the first platform shall be no greater than 3.40 m.
If the first platform is positioned with a vertical distance <0.6 m from the ground, the vertical distance between the first platform and the next platform shall be no greater than 3.40 m. NOTE These distances can be seen in Figure 19.
