3.1 GENERAL
All components of high pressure water jetting systems shall be inspected, serviced and generally maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. Records shall be kept of service, repairs and maintenance. Defects identified in the high pressure water jetting systems shall be reported to the supervisor so that the defect may be investigated and rectified. All defective equipment shall be tagged out of service and quarantined to prevent use.
3.2.2 Filters and strainers
All water filters shall be checked at regular intervals, dependent upon the water supply conditions, and in accordance with pump manufacturer’s recommendations. Where this is not possible, suitable filtration and/or water treatment shall be employed to achieve manufacturer’s specifications.
CAUTION: EXTREME CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THE WATER IS CLEANED THROUGH FILTERS WHICH MEET THE PUMP MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATION/S. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY CAUSE DESTRUCTION OF THE EQUIPMENT AND MALFUNCTION OF THE CONTROL MECHANISMS, POSSIBLY CAUSING SERIOUS ACCIDENTS.
3.2.3.1 Hose inspection
All hose assemblies shall be visually inspected prior to each use to ensure the following:
(a) The correct pressure rating and size is selected. Operators shall ensure the pressure rating of the hose assembly is adequate for the intended application.
(b) There is no apparent structural damage, e.g. corroded or broken wires, bulging, kinking or cuts. Where the hose assembly shows evidence of damage, steps shall be taken to determine its serviceability before use.
(c) All end fittings and couplings are of the correct size and type (imperial/metric) are in good order (no cracks, damaged or corroded threads, worn or damaged autoclave tapers or split swage or ferules), and of the correct pressure rating for the unit operating pressure.
(d) All hose connections to equipment or other hoses shall be restrained with appropriate hose restraints, braided stocking or other suitable means to restrict their movement in the event of a hose separation or end failure. Whip checks shall not be used as a hose restraint.
(e) Additionally, the point at which the hose attaches to any hand or foot operated device shall be protected by an over-sheath shroud manufactured from materials capable of withstanding a direct force of the jet of high pressure water to protect the operator in the event of hose separation/or end failure.
3.2.5 Jetting nozzles
All jetting nozzles shall be kept clean and stored safely when not in use. Nozzles shall be checked before installation to ensure the outlet orifice is not damaged or obstructed. Damaged nozzles shall not be used and shall be replaced. Any nozzles identified as being defective shall be removed from service and repaired or destroyed.
3.2.6 Jetting guns
Jetting guns shall be checked prior to task with particular attention being given to the trigger mechanism and guard to ensure correct operation. Class A jetting guns should be fitted with a safety trigger. Class B jetting guns shall be fitted with a double action safety trigger (hold-to-activate) mechanism to prevent inadvertent operation. Where the hose connects the jetting gun it shall be restrained using a braided stocking and also covered by a hose shroud. In addition handles and or shoulder stocks shall be fitted where required by manufacturer’s instructions.
3.2.7 Foot control devices
All foot control devices shall be protected by a guard or cover to prevent inadvertent or accidental actuation of the device. All foot control devices shall be checked prior to task with particular attention being given to the actuating mechanism and guard to ensure correct operation. All Class B foot control devices shall be fitted with a double action safety trigger mechanism to prevent inadvertent operation. Where the hose connects the jetting foot control device it shall be restrained using a braided stocking and also covered by a hose shroud.
