5.3.4Conductor surface finishes
Solid round conductors shall be unplated or plated with tin,or silver. Stranded conductorsshall have strands unplated or plated with tin or silver.
5.3.5Wire insulation
The detail product specification or the manufacturer’s specification of the non-accessible lDtermination or of the connector using said non-accessible ID termination shall specify theoutside diameter of the wire that can be accommodated.
The insulation material shall be compatible with the insulation displacement process, i.e. theinsulation material shall be capable of being readily displaced by the inner edges of thebeams without cutting the conductor or conductor strands. In case of stranded conductors, theinsulation shall, in addition, be capable of keeping the strands in place so that they are notunduly displaced when making the lD connection.
For ribbon cables, the insulation between the conductors including any additional insulationforming the ribbon shall additionally be capable of being readily penetrated by the tips of thebeams.
5.4 Non-accessible insulation displacement connections (ID connections)
a) The combination of wire, non-accessible lD termination and, if applicable, connection tool
shall be compatible.
b) When inserting the wire into the connection slot of the non-accessible lD termination, the
inner sides of the beams shall displace the wire insulation and deform:
– the diameter of a solid round conductor
or
– the apparent diameter of a stranded conductor (i.e. the circumscribing circle of thebundle of strands) and, in addition, the diameter of those strands which are in contactwith the beams in order to produce a gas-tight connection.
c) The wire shall be correctly located in the connection slot of the non-accessible ID termination as specified by the detail product specification or the manufacturer’sspecification (either of the accessible IDtermination or of the connector using suchtermination). There shall be a sufficient distance between the termination and the wireend. The minimum value of that distance depends on the wire used and shall be asspecified by the detail product specification or the manufacturer’s specification.
d) Only one wire in one connection slot shall be used.
6.1 Overview
All tests shall be carried out with non-accessible lD terminations and non-accessible IDconnections being in their normal operating position, for example in their housings (e.g. theconnector insulating body).
Where a non-accessible ID termination is designed to accommodate more than one non-accessible lD connection, each connection shall be tested individually.
6.5Recovery
Where specified, the specimen shall be allowed to stabilize under standard atmosphericconditions for a period of 1 h to 2 h after testing in accordance with lEC 60512-1.
6.6specimen
A test specimen shall consist of the component having one or a specified number ofaccessible lD terminations with wires connected according to manufacturer’s instruction to theconnection slots of each accessible ID termination. The wires connected with a multipoleconnector may be a multi-core cable or a number of single wires.
When mounting is required in a test, the specimens shall be mounted using the normalmounting method, unless otherwise specified.
