1.3 Application
The drive system will be used to start, acceleratc, and control the speed of a motor-driven load. Whenspecified, the ASD shall be capable of achieving synchronization with the utility power system andconnecting the motor directly to this system. The ASD supplier shall define the requirements for matchingthe motor and ASD to the load and the ASD, including input transformer if required, to the power systemsuch that they operate as a system with no unsatisfactory transient, torsional, heating,or power-qualityproblems. The ASD system shall be suitable for the service conditions described in the data sheets, including the ambient temperature and humidity conditions; altitude;input power-supply voltage andminimum and maximum short-circuit capacities of the source; and auxiliary power-supply voltage.
Unless otherwise specified, the ASD and all related parts shall be suitable for a minimum of five years ofcontinuous operation with a minimum availability of 99.8% over a five-year run. The vendor shall identifyany redundancy requirements necessary to meet this end. The vendor shall provide an expected mean timebetween failures(MTBF) and mean time to repair (MTTR) for the ASD under the listed service conditions, based on known experience. The vendor shall list all components that are expected to require replacementin a 20-year operating life. For the purposes of reliability predictions,MTBF parameters shall be verifiedby analysis and supported by field experience.
NOTE 1—To achieve a continuous run time of five years, power electronic(PE) equipment should be designed toachieve an MTBF of not less than eight years.NAVSo P-3641A and NAVSEA TEO00-AB-GTP-010 are potentialreferences for design and de-rating guidelines. See also lEEE Std 1413TMi
NOTE2—For purposes of reliability and availability data, a failure is considered not to be a set point related event thatrequires an unscheduled shutdown of the ASD. This excludes external events such as process, power supply, buildingair conditioning and maintenancc/operator crror.
Power clectronic(PE) equipment shall be designed to achieve a MTTR of l h or less for replacement of thepart. The maximum time to repair shall not exceed 3 h at the 95% confidence level. Repair times shallinclude the time required for detection, isolation, disassembly, unit replacement, reassembly, alignment, verification of repair, setup, and return to operation. The above times assume that spare parts andcompetent personnel are on hand.
NOTE3—“Isolation”and “return to operation”involve equipment, processes and procedures external to and notwithin the scope of the ASD system. If these functions add appreciable time to the repair process, this additional timeshould be factored into the above MTTR numbers.
5.1 ASD structure
The ASD (and attached switchgear, reactor, and transformer,as applicable) shall form a rigid self-supporting structure suitable for floor mounting and be suitable for the environmental conditions listed inthe data sheet (Annex A).All power-cable entries shall include adequate cable spreading and bending spacein accordance with the applicable local codes, for example, the National Electrical Code&(NECR)(NFPA70) with allowance for cable terminations, including stress cones and shielding, as listed on the data sheets.
Enclosures shall have provision for grounding. Multi-compartment equipment shall provide a ground bus, which shall have an ampacity at least that of the incoming equipment grounding conductor (see NEC Table250.122).All points of connection between the ground bus, equipment-grounding conductor, and structuralassemblies shall be free of nonconducting material, such as paint.Structural members of adjacentcompartments shall be securely bolted together or equipped with bonding jumpers (which, where used, shall have ampacity at least that of the equipment grounding conductor or 200 A, whichever is greater).
