NOTE—The editing instructions contained in this amendment define how to merge the matcrial contained therein intothe existing base standard and its amendments to form the comprehensive standard.’
The editing instructions are shown in bold italic. Four cditing instructions are used: change, deletc, insert, and replace.Change is used to make corrections in existing text or tables. The editing instruction specifies the location of thechange and describes what is being changed by using strikethrough (to remove old material) and underscore (to addnew material). Delete removes existing material. Insert adds new material without disturbing the existing material.Insertions may require renumbering. If so, renumbering instructions are given in the editing instruction.Replace is usedto make changes in figures or equations by removing the existing figure or equation and replacing it with a new one.Editing instructions, change markings, and this NOTE will not be carried over into future editions because the changeswill be incorporated into the base standard.
5.2.1 General hazard evaluation
There are multiple hazards associated with batteries. The hazards include, but are not limited to, chemical, electrical, arc flash and thermal. When selecting PPE. all hazards should be considered and a riskassessment should be conducted. An example of a hazard risk assessment is shown in Figure H.1.Additional guidance can be found in NFPA 70E-2015[B8] and in the associated 2015 handbook.NFPA 70EHB-2015 [B3].
c.1 Current effects
An electric shock can occur when contact is made with battery system conductors.Voltage and Electricalcurrent levels (primarily determined by voltage and human body resistance) along with ac frequency (Hz)and the length of time contact is made determine the amount of shock received. The path that current flowsthrough the body, the type of body, and the condition of the body influence the severity of the physiologicaleffects (see Kuphaldt[B56]IEC 60479 [B2]).
