7 Insulating Materials
7.1 A material used for mounting of uninsulated capacitor terminals whose deterioration could lead to a risk of fire or electric shock condition shall comply with the requirements specified in the material property considerations table, of the Standard for Polymeric Materials — Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations, UL 746C.
Exception: A polymeric material provided as insulation shall:
a) Be classed V-2 minimum in accordance with the Standard for Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances, UL 94, or
b) Comply with the 20 mm (3/4 -inch) flame flammability test specified in the Standard for Polymeric Materials — Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations, UL 746C.
7.2 Internal insulating material shall comply with the applicable requirements for the Dielectric Voltage-Withstand Test, Section 19.
7.3 An internal insulator between the capacitor elements and the metal casing of the capacitor shall be moisture resistant and shall be resistant to deterioration from the materials it is exposed to. The Volume Change and Extraction Tests shall determine compliance after immersion for 70 hours in the contact fluid per the Standard for Gaskets and Seals, UL 157. See the Standard Test Method for Rubber Property — Effect of Liquids, ASTM D471, for equivalent methods. There shall be no volume change (swelling) greater than 25 percent and no extraction (weight loss) less than 10 percent of the original.
7.4 A metal casing of a capacitor that is not provided with insulation from the capacitor elements and electrolyte in accordance with 7.2 and 7.3 shall be considered an uninsulated part.
8 Insulated Leads and Terminals
8.1 An insulated lead of a capacitor/module shall be rated for the voltage and current involved. The temperature rating of the insulation of a capacitor lead shall not be less than the temperature rating of the capacitor.
8.2 The connection of an insulated lead inside a capacitor shall be secure. Strain relief shall be provided and shall comply with the Pull-out test, Section 11.1.
Exception: Bare leads provided for securing the capacitor to a printed wiring board need not comply with the Pull-Out Test of Section 11.1. Bare leads provided for this purpose shall comply with the material and minimum thickness requirements outlined in 8.3.
8.3 Capacitors with wiring terminals shall have terminals provided with a soldering lug, pressure terminal connection, wire-binding screw, or quick-connect terminal rated for securing the size of the conductor to be connected. The terminal material shall be at least 0.02 inch (0.51 mm) thick and shall be of copper, copper alloy, tin-plated steel, or other metal rated for the application.
8.4 A quick-connect terminal shall be provided with a detent, such as a dimple (depression) or hole in a tab that acts to engage a raised portion on the connector providing a latching means for the mating parts.
8.5 A threaded terminal shall comply with the Torque test, Section 11.2.
8.6 Wiring of a module shall be routed to protect insulation from abrasion or other damage. Openings in capacitor module enclosures through which wiring passes shall be smooth and provided with insulation bushings to avoid abrasion of the insulation.
8.7 Wiring within a capacitor module for separate circuits shall be suitable for the highest voltages involved or shall be securely separated to maintain spacings as outlined in Section 9.
